The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Reason of Tyrannosaurus death...?...[ 436 ]

Tyrannosaurus Rex killed by a sore throat

The mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex may have succumbed to a fatal sore throat, scientists believe.

Researchers have found that the undisputed king of the dinosaurs may have been ferocious killer, but it was susceptible to a bacterial infection that stopped it eating.

They believe the illness, which is similar to one that continues to affect eagles and hawks today, was so severe it would have led to a painful death from starvation.

The findings emerged after scientists re-examined holes in the jaws of one of the most famous dinosaur fossils ever unearthed, the 42 feet long, 13 feet high, T-Rex at the Field Museum in Chicago known as Sue.

Originally they thought the holes were battle scars from fights with rivals but the new investigation suggests she was felled by a lowly parasite that still afflicts modern birds.

The study, led by Dr Ewan Wolff of the University of Wisconsin and Dr Steven Salisbury of the University of Queensland, Australia, pins the demise of Sue – and other T-rex – on an infection called trichomonosis.

It is possible the infection in her throat and mouth may have been so acute that the seven-ton dinosaur starved to death, said Dr Wolff.

“We have evidence of several tyrannosaurs that were severely affected by the parasite,” he said.

“We hypothesise that severe cases of the disease would have made feeding and breathing very difficult. In the case of “Sue” this may well have led to her demise.”

“The disease could have been transmitted in a couple of different ways. First, it could have been transmitted by face-biting or snout-to-snout contact of tyrannosaurs via saliva. Second, it could have been transmitted by consumption of flesh from prey or its own species infected with the parasite.

“It would have been a rather pitiful drawn out death from starvation.”

The study was published in the journal Public Library of Science One.

Ex-gangster has death sentence reduced to life in murder of Nagasaki Mayor Itcho Ito

FUKUOKA -29/09/09- A high court overturned a death sentence for a gang member convicted of gunning down the mayor of Nagasaki in 2007, handing him a life sentence.

The Fukuoka High Court sentenced Tetsuya Shiroo, 62, a senior member of a gang group, to life in prison for murder and violation of the Public Offices Election Law over the 2007 fatal shooting of Nagasaki Mayor Itcho Ito.

Police at the scene of the fatal shooting of Nagasaki Mayor Itcho Ito

"The death penalty is too heavy," said Presiding Judge Shoichi Matsuo on Tuesday, dismissing the death sentence handed down by the Nagasaki District Court in May last year. Shiroo had appealed the lower court ruling.

Ito, then aged 61, was shot twice from behind upon returning to his campaign office near JR Nagasaki Station during the mayoral election campaign on April 17, 2007. He died in the predawn hours the next day.

Weighing the gravity of the crime committed against an incumbent mayor during his election campaign, the Nagasaki District Court sentenced Shiroo to capital punishment, saying, "There is no choice but to opt for the ultimate penalty even in full consideration of there only being a single victim."

During the appeal hearing, the defense counsel for Shiroo demanded a lighter sentence, arguing that the defendant had initially planned to only cause an uproar by firing a blank shot above Ito's campaign car, and denied that the crime was premeditated. "There was a single victim. The fact that the victim was a mayor during his election campaign cannot be said to have magnified the damage," Shiroo's attorney said.

On Tuesday, Presiding Judge Matsuo said the defendant's motive "was not the obstruction of the election itself, and there was no aspect of gain" in his crime. Acknowledging that the lower court's death sentence was "not inapprehensible," Matsuo said, "The fact that the murder cost the life of a single person does not immediately rule out the choice for the death penalty, but it cannot be denied that this issue should be taken seriously."

While recognizing that the slaying of an election candidate constituted a "direct obstruction of an election and a challenge to democracy," the presiding judge said the defendant was mainly motivated by his grudge against the mayor.

"These circumstances of the crime cannot be disregarded, making one hesitate to opt for the death penalty," the presiding judge concluded.

Guinea rally death toll nears 130, .. updated to 157

Soldiers arresting protesters, 28/09
About 50,000 people were said to have protested

(BBC)-29 September 2009 13:11 UK

At least 128 people were killed when Guinean troops opened fire on opposition protesters on Monday, rights groups and opposition figures claim.

Earlier police said 87 people had died, but local activists say hospital sources confirmed a much higher toll.

Human rights groups say they have had reports of soldiers bayoneting people and women being stripped and raped in the streets during Monday's protest.

Junta head Captain Moussa Dadis Camara denied knowledge of sexual assaults.

About 50,000 people were protesting over rumours that Capt Camara intends to run for president in an election schedule for next January.

But soldiers moved in to quell the rally using tear gas and baton charges and firing live ammunition into the crowds.

An eyewitness told Human Rights Watch: "I saw the Red Berets [an elite military unit] catch some of the women who were trying to flee, rip off their clothes, and stick their hands in their private parts.

"Others beat the women, including on their genitals. It was pathetic - the women were crying out."

Another eyewitness told the group: "I saw several women stripped and then put inside the military trucks and taken away. I don't know what happened to them."

There has been worldwide condemnation of the violence.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the Guinean authorities to exercise maximum restraint, while the West African regional body Ecowas is reported to be pursuing sanctions against the military regime

UP DATED 15:50-Reuters

TO ΒΗΜΑ- ON LINE, Τρίτη 29 Σεπτεμβρίου 2009 [ 13:28 ]

Iran's parliament warns

Some 239 Iranian parliamentarians have made a statement warning the five permanent members of UN Security Council and Germany, the Iranian MEHR news agency reported.

The parliamentarians congratulated the Iranian people with the construction of the second station to enrich uranium near the Gum city. The parliamentarians regarded the meeting to be held on Oct. 1 between the"5 +1" countries, and Iran to discuss Iran's nuclear program as a great opportunity (for the "5 +1" countries).

"We are observing the developments and we state to countries that will participate in the discussions that this meeting is an historic opportunity, which may exclude the discussion on the nuclear program from the "frozen" state. We recommend the"5 +1" countries to properly assess this historic opportunity. If they repeat previous mistakes, the Parliament, using his powers, will take a different decision," the statement said.

Bees attack crash victims

A swarm of bees attacked victims and rescue workers after a van carrying the beehives crashed near the Turkish resort of Marmaris.

One person died and more than 20 were injured in the accident.

Emergency services and local beekeepers battled swarms of angry bees for around four hours in an attempt to free two people trapped in the wreckage and protect passers-by.

One of those trapped, Feyzullah Acar, 18, later died in hospital. Ahmet Altiparmak, the regional governor, said that it was not yet known whether he died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash or the effects of the bee stings.

Around 20 people were taken to local hospitals, most of them rescue workers injured by the bees. Altiparmak said that some were in a serious condition. One of the injured was a doctor who attended the scene despite being allergic to bee-stings.

A police officer at the scene said: "It was like an angry black buzzing cloud. You could see it for miles but worse than that were the scattered bees which spread around the area attacking everyone.

"We had to remove the victims' clothes before we could put them in the ambulance as they were swarming with bees."

The crash happened after the van struck a stationary truck on a motorway near Marmaris, which is renowned for the quality of its honey.

Local authorities put out a call for help from the local beekeeping association. Around 50 beekeepers rushed to the scene, dressing the injured in protective gear.

Local television showed rescue workers hosing down the crash site to deter the bees.

Russia is worried about Iran conducting test launches of missiles, Russian news agencies quoted Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying on Monday, Reuters reported.

"Of course it is worrisome, when missile launches happen against the backdrop of unresolved situation concerning Iran's nuclear program," he said.

"I am convinced restraint is needed," Lavrov added. The agencies did not specify whether he meant restraint by Iran or by the West in response to the tests.

Sept.27,2009 - The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is developing the world's first movable platform for taking observations of the seabed.

While most countries possess fixed seabed observation posts, JAMSTEC's is the first that can be relocated. As well as being capable of measuring sea temperature and salinity, it's also designed to be used for investigating life on the seabed.

The seabed is home to some unique organisms, and while changes in the earth's crust and acidification of the world's seas due to global warming are thought to have some effect on the seabed environment, the extent of this is not exactly known.

The platform itself consists of a 2 by 4 meter frame, to which various instruments, batteries and so on are attached, and emplaced by an unmanned submersible. Each one costs around 200 million yen, and a prototype has already been completed.

One issue still to be fixed is that of power. Fixed observation posts can be powered by cable from nearby islands, but the new movable models are forced to use batteries. JAMSTEC is now looking for a partner to develop compact, high-capacity batteries within a few years, and work on economizing the platforms' power usage.

China's military power[ 427 ]

The Mainichi Daily News

China says military arsenal comperable with west

BEIJING (AP) -(Mainichi Japan) September 27, 2009-

China's military now possesses most of the sophisticated weapon systems found in the arsenals of developed Western nations, the country's defense minister said.

Many of China's systems, including the J-10 fighter jet, latest-generation tanks, navy destroyers, and cruise and intercontinental ballistic missiles, match or are close to matching the capabilities of those in the West, Liang Guanglie said in a rare interview posted Monday on the ministry's Web site.

"This is an extraordinary achievement that speaks to the level of our military's modernization and the huge change in our country's technological strength," Liang said.

But an analyst said the claim was likely directed at the Chinese public and exaggerated its technological prowess.

The minister's remarks come ahead of the country's biggest military parade in a decade scheduled for the Oct. 1 National Day in Beijing. That event will showcase much of the country's most advanced equipment, the fruit of a booming economy and nearly two decades of annual double-digit percentage increases in the defense budget.

Liang said he believed the parade would "display the image of a mighty force, a civilized force, a victorious force."

In its 2009 report on Beijing's military power, the Pentagon ranked Chinese defense technology below that of the United States -- as it always has -- but noted that the country's armed forces have improved their capacity to carry out operations away from its shores and deny other militaries access to its airspace and seas off its coast.

Hans M. Kristensen, an expert on the Chinese military at the Federation of American Scientists, said Liang's comments may have overestimated the country's capabilities.

"Although Western countries are concerned and uncertain about China's military modernization, China hasn't gone through the wars that have shaped and sharpened the swords and strategies of the Western militaries," Kristensen said. "It takes a great deal more than building a weapon system for it to be technologically comparable."

The 2.3 million-member People's Liberation Army is the world's largest standing military and its modernization has been accompanied by gradual steps toward greater engagement with the outside world. Liang said China has contributed 13,000 troops to U.N. peace keeping operations along with three navy flotillas to join in anti-piracy patrols of the coast of Somalia.

Despite such moves, however, the PLA remains largely a closed shop and military ties with the United States and other nations are often hobbled by disputes over Taiwan and other political issues.

China's improved capabilities are also seen as emboldening the country's military and civilian leaders in using force to back up political and territorial claims. Chinese ships have repeatedly harassed U.S. Navy surveillance vessels collecting intelligence off China's southeastern coast, while Chinese submarines have aggressively pursued aircraft carrier battle groups.

And while relations with Taiwan have warmed in recent months, Beijing continues to add to the hundreds of missiles it has pointed at the self-governing island that China considers its own territory -- to be unified with by force if need be.

Analysts say the odds of conflict with the U.S., Japan and other regional militaries is likely to increase as China further beefs up its arsenal.

China announced a 14.9 percent rise in military spending in its 2009 budget, to 480.6 billion yuan ($70.3 billion). Many observers say actual Chinese military spending is much higher.

Socrates Wins however Loses Majority in Portugal, Exit Polls Show (Update 1)

Sept. 27 (Bloomberg, By Anabela Reis) --

Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates’s Socialist Party won the most votes in the country’s parliamentary elections, while losing its majority, exit polls showed.

The Socialists took between 36.2 percent and 40.4 percent, according to polls reported by SIC television channel and 36 percent to 40 percent, according to polls reported by state- owned RTP1. The Social Democrats, led by Manuela Ferreira Leite, received between 26.9 percent and 30.7 percent, according to SIC, and 25 percent to 29 percent, according to RTP1.

The projections showed the Socialists getting between 99 and 103 seats in parliament, less than the 116 seats needed for a majority. It won 121 seats in the 2005. Manuela Ferreira Leite’s Social Democrats may get between 74 to 77 seats today.

Triumphant Merkel eyes new coalition [ 425 ]

Merkel 'heads for' new coalition

Angela Merkel said she wanted to be a chancellor "for all Germans"

(BBC)-Sunday, 27 September 2009 21:08 UK

Chancellor Angela Merkel has been returned to power in Germany, exit polls suggest, after her conservative bloc won more than 33% of the vote.

Mrs Merkel told supporters they had achieved "something magnificent", but said she wanted to be a chancellor of all Germans at a moment of crisis.

Mrs Merkel's bloc now looks set to form a centre-right alliance with her preferred partner, the pro-reform FDP.

She says the alliance will get Germany out of its worst crisis in 60 years.

Her rival, SPD leader Frank-Walter Steinmeier, admitted a "bitter defeat".

He said his party would be "vigilant in opposition".

See a breakdown of what parties got, based on German TV exit poll

"The voters have decided and the result is a bitter day for German Social Democracy ... there is no way of talking it up - the result is a bitter defeat," the SPD leader said.

Still, in the "Elefantenrunde" debate that traditionally follows the German election, involving each of the party leaders (the "elephants"), Mr Steinmeier said it "would not be very sensible" to resign and vowed "to go on fighting".

Exit polls in Germany, Europe's largest economy and the biggest member of the European Union, are generally considered to be extremely reliable.

Jonny Dymond
BBC News, Berlin

As exit poll results neared, officials and activists filled Christian Democrat headquarters in central Berlin, to eat, drink, gossip and of course speculate about the results to come. Then, drinks were set down and eyes turned towards TV screens.

Chancellor Merkel's own party has done well but that's not what caused the great cheer here. It's the fact that the right-wing FDP looks like it has done very well, exceeding expectations.

The left-right coalition, the so-called "grand coalition" between the Social Democrats and the Christian Democrats can now be consigned to history.

Angela Merkel will still be chancellor tomorrow but overnight the political landscape will have changed completely.

Preliminary results are expected in the next few hours.

The BBC's Steve Rosenberg in Berlin says the result seems a disaster for the Social Democrats (SPD), who could have their lowest share of the vote since World War II.

The SPD have shared power with Mrs Merkel's CDU/CSU in an awkward grand coalition since the last elections in 2005.

An exit poll for ZDF television gave the CDU/CSU 33.5%, SPD 23.5% and the FDP, Mrs Merkel's preferred partners, 14.5%.

This would give the centre-right alliance, with 48% in total, a narrow majority over the SPD and the two other major parties, the Greens and the Left, both of which increased their share of the vote.

"Our main objective has been achieved, namely a change of government, which for me is what really counts this evening," a smiling Mrs Merkel told cheering supporters in Berlin.

"I want to be the chancellor of all Germans, so that things improve for our country, especially in such a moment of crisis."

HEWITT ON EUROPE
Gavin Hewitt
Now Merkel has the opportunity to reveal where her true instincts lie

"I would not tell anyone to remain sober, but we don't want to forget that there are many problems in our country to be solved," she added.

She said she would hold "swift and decisive" talks with FDP leader Guido Westerwelle, whom some are tipping as the next foreign minister.

Mr Westerwelle said the new government would act "responsibly".

"Now the work starts for real... for Germany and our people," he said

France has almost 3,000 soldiers deployed in Afghanistan

(BBC) Sunday, 27 September 2009, 10:56 UK

Three French soldiers have been killed in a violent storm in north-eastern Afghanistan, the French military says.

Army spokesman Christophe Prazuck said one of the soldiers was hit by lightning and the other two were swept away by a fast flowing river.

The soldiers, serving with a parachute regiment, "died accidentally" at night in Kapisa province, the French presidency said.

Last month, 10 French soldiers were killed in an ambush east of Kabul.

In a separate development earlier on Sunday, Afghan Energy Minister Ismail Khan survived a roadside bomb attack in the western city of Herat, which killed at least four people.

A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the blast in a telephone call to news agencies.

Sarkozy's support

French President Nicolas Sarkozy's office said in a statement that the three soldiers "died accidentally during an operation taking place by night" in the Afghanya Valley.

"These three soldiers... have paid with their life for France's commitment to peace and the security of the Afghan people," the statement said.

It added that Mr Sarkozy continued to support the French mission.

France is among the top five contributors to Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) operations and has almost 3,000 troops deployed mainly in eastern Afghanistan.

Iran has tested two short-range missiles[ 420 ]

The missiles tested are believed to have short ranges

(BBC)-Sunday, 27 September 2009 09:36 UK

Iran has tested two short-range missiles and announced plans for a controversial long-range missile test, state TV reports.

It says the short-range missiles were the Tondar and Fateh, with a reported range of up to 170km (100 miles).

Tehran said it would test a long-range Shahab-3 missile, believed to be capable of reaching Israel, on Monday.

The tests come amid mounting tensions between Iran and the West over Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

The tests are likely to be seen as a gesture of defiance by Iran, says the BBC's Tehran correspondent, Jon Leyne.

Earlier this week, Iran disclosed that it was building a second uranium enrichment plant, despite UN demands it cease its enrichment activities.

MAXIMUM MISSILE RANGE
Shahab-3b: 2,500km
Sajjil-1 and 2: 2,000km
Shahab-3a: 1,800km
Shahab-3: 1,300km
Shahab-2: 500km
Zelzal: up to 400km
Fateh: 170km
Tondar: 150km

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad insisted that the plant, near the holy city of Qom, did not breach UN regulations and said it was open for inspection by UN experts.

But leaders of the US, Britain and France accused Tehran of keeping the plant secret in breach of UN rules.

They raised the prospect of new, tougher sanctions against Iran if it does not fully co-operate with global powers.

Iran is due to meet with representatives of the so-called P5 + 1 on 1 October to discuss a range of issues, including its nuclear plans. The P5 + 1 groups together the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the US, Russia, China, the UK and France - along with Germany.

'Mock targets'

Iran's state-run al-Alam and Press TV channels said on Sunday that the short-range missiles test-fired during military exercises were of Tondar-69 and Fateh-110 type.

It's not the first time the Shahab missile has been tested but it's still likely to provoke condemnation in Western capitals.

Rightly or not this will be seen as a gesture of defiance by Iran.

It comes two days after the existence was revealed of a previously undisclosed nuclear plant, thought the test itself is likely to have been planned well in advance.

It aired footage of a missile launch in desert-like terrain, without giving specifics on the range of the missiles or other details.

Western defence experts believe the Fateh, or Conqueror, missile has a range of up to 170km (100 miles), while the Tondar (Thunder) can travel up to 150km (93 miles).

Iran says the Shahab-3 (Meteor-3), which was first tested in July 2008, can fly some 2,000km, which makes it capable of hitting Israel and US bases in the Gulf.

However, Western defence experts believe it could strike targets up to 1,300km (807 miles) away.

The experts say Iran's claim of the longer range could indicate that the 2008 test involved a newer, modified version of the Shahab 3, perhaps the rumoured Shahab 3b, which Iran says would have a range of up to 2,500km (1553 miles).

Many believe Iran is attempting to develop its Shahab missiles to carry nuclear warheads, but analysts say perfecting this ability is a complex process.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced on Saturday they would begin war games - codenamed The Great Prophet IV - to "improve the Islamic Republic armed forces' defence capabilities".
